Maroonage and Resistance: The struggle for freedom.
African men and women did not live passively through the subjugation of their rights.
On the contrary, they were protagonists and reacted with determination by forming Maroon communities to liberate their sisters and brothers, and then to maintain that freedom.
Other forms of settlement
Many enslaved women and men rescued their traditional values in forms of settlement with particular characteristics, such as the Garifuna or the Raizal people.
Rebellions and revolts
All over the Americas, slaves revolted to reclaim their roots and sense of belonging.
The outcome of the revolts could vary from the effective gaining of freedom to the execution of the insurrectionists.
