The process of abolition of slavery during the formation of the Uruguayan State
The process of abolitionism during the formation of the Uruguayan State was long, complicated,
and had advances and setbacks. It was born with the first intentions in 1813 until its formal realization in 1862.
The patriotic troops
During the Revolution of Independence, dark-skinned battalions were formed under the promise of giving them freedom -if they were lucky enough to survive-, but this was not always the case.
The abolition laws
Since 1813, there have been different laws on slavery that were never strictly enforced.
Their wording used euphemisms that did nothing more than disguise slavery, using friendly terms to define it, but which favored the owners and maintained subjugation.
Other forms of introduction of enslaved persons
Although the abolition laws were not strictly enforced, their enactment led to a gradual decline in the slave trade.
In these circumstances, slave owners and traffickers devised new illicit ways of introducing African men and women.
