During colonial times, the slave trade was the main trade activity in Montevideo, which was declared the only port of sale in the region.
In this context, the «Caserío de los negros» was built, the most important complex of buildings outside the walls of Montevideo.

In 2006, the physical place where the Caserío de los negros used to stand was historically revalued,
as one of the ways of not forgetting the terrible circumstances in which the ancestors of our Afro-descendant community arrived to these lands.
