Conventillo Gaboto

Often forgotten in popular recognition, the Cordón neighborhood shares the honor of being the birthplace of candombe, along with Palermo and Barrio Sur. Much of this tradition was forged in the Gaboto tenement, where one of the three mother songs was born: the "Cordón song." In this place that kept alive the values and essence of their ancestral roots, poor, happy, and supportive Afro-descendant families lived. Families who, like their sisters in Sur and Palermo, suffered the atrocious discriminatory policy that expelled them from the central areas of Montevideo, under a program that did not want Afro-descendants living there. Here, a brief review of the history of this tenement, recalling some of its notable figures and the three evictions it suffered.
