Usually overlooked in history, the infamous trade and use of enslaved men and women played a key role during the development of colonial Montevideo. For a long time our port was the main entry route for enslaved people who, directly from Africa or passing through Brazil, arrived at the Río de la Plata between the 18th and 19th centuries.
