MEDIO MUNDO

During the second half of the 19th century and in a changing Montevideo, real estate speculators created this form of housing. We tell you the context and its main features.

The place

People who lived in the Medio Mundo tell us what the tenement was like.

Life

A place without the best conditions did not prevent living a happy childhood or a harmonious coexistence among many people.

Forced eviction

In 1978, State terrorism uprooted the inhabitants of the Medio Mundo tenement from their place, taking them to live in an abandoned factory, in very bad conditions and under an almost prison-like regime, disintegrating one of the fundamental centers of the Afro-Uruguayan collective. Forcibly evicted with the promise of return, many still hope to be able to return.
